The Data Specialist will be responsible for developing and managing advanced data infrastructure to support the company's core applications and analytics. You will work alongside a diverse technology team, including a solution architect, business intelligence analysts, software developers, and business users, to ensure smooth and efficient data operations.
This role also offers the opportunity to contribute to and grow into leading AI and machine learning initiatives at Certarus. As our customers and teams adopt AI-enabled solutions, you will help ensure our data is AI-ready (trusted, well-modelled, and well-documented) and may partner with analytics and product teams on experiments, PoCs, and production deployments. Schedule:
- This is a full-time position with normal working hours; little to no travel is expected.
- We support a hybrid work environment consisting of flexible remote and in-person collaboration at our Calgary office.

Duties & Responsibilities:
- Design and implement complex enterprise data projects on the Azure platform.
- Curate large amounts of raw data from Operational, Transactional and SCADA systems for Lakehouse, Warehouse, Customer Data Share, App Integrations and Analytics workloads.
- Develop and maintain complex & scalable data ETL/ELT pipelines to meet the needs of Certarusβ software applications, API integrations and Analytics.
- Provide guidance from a Data Engineering perspective during architecture planning and technology selection processes and roadmaps for data management & data governance.
- Combine various data types from multiple sources into a data Lakehouse/Warehouse.
- Develop data models to support predictive and prescriptive analytics initiatives.Β
- To drive business outcomes, perform data analysis and statistical trending on big data.
- Ensure the reliability and scalability of Certarusβ data infrastructure, working with cloud service providers and internal stakeholders.
- Develop, deploy and maintain CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps & Github to ensure seamless and efficient deployment of our data solutions.
- Collaborate with BI, product, and operations teams to define AI/ML use cases and translate them into reliable, production-ready datasets.
- Build and maintain feature-ready datasets, labelling/ground-truth workflows, and data quality checks that support machine learning and advanced analytics.
- Support MLOps and data-to-model pipelines in Azure (e.g., Azure AI Foundry, Databricks ML), including monitoring, versioning, and reproducibility.
- Contribute to emerging GenAI/LLM workloads where applicable (e.g., embeddings, vector databases, and retrieval pipelines) while following security and governance requirements.

Requirements:
- 3+ years' experience as a Data Engineer, Data Specialist or similar technical role
- Experience with Microsoft Azure solutions, including Delta/Data Lakes, Databricks, Synapse, Data Factory, IoT Hub, Functions, Apache Spark, LogicApps, Notebooks, and PowerShell
- Technical expertise in building and maintaining complex data pipelines in Azure Databricks, Azure Data factory and Microsoft Fabric
- Experience designing and building databases (SQL, NoSQL, Vector, PostgreSQL)
- Strong Knowledge of programming languages (e.g. Python, Scala, SQL, JavaScript, C#)
- Experience building distributed systems meant to process batch and streaming data
- Experience with AI/ML concepts and tools (e.g., statistics/experimentation, scikit-learn, MLflow, Azure Machine Learning, vector databases/embeddings) is an asset.
- Strong curiosity and a continuous-learning mindset; comfortable acting as an AI advocate and helping others adopt AI responsibly.
- Experience with messaging-oriented architectures (e.g. MQTT), and APIs is an asset
- Post-secondary degree in Computer Science or related technical discipline, or equivalent industry experience an asset. Data Engineering certifications are an asset.
