Short Description

Β The Oncology Data Specialist 1 (ODS1) performs assigned operations of the Oncology Data Services Department to meet the requirements of MD Anderson at Cooper University Health, the American College of Surgeons (ACoS), The Joint Commission, and state regulations. The work done by an ODS1 contributes to maintaining oncology related accreditation status and ensures compliance with the New Jersey State Department of Health oncology data reporting legal requirements. Oncology Data Specialist 1 main functions are abstracting, case finding, performing follow up, participating in tumor board coordination and other duties as assigned.

1.1 Proficient, or developing skills to perform, abstracting, case finding, follow up and other responsibilities of the Data Oncology Services Department.


1.2 Working knowledge of standard setting resources used in the Data Oncology field such as the American Joint Commission on Cancer (AJCC), NCI-SEER (National Cancer Institute-Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program), ACoS-Commission on Cancer (CoC), and New Jersey State Cancer Registry and the department Abstracting Guidelines.
1.3 Proficient, or developing skills to perform, abstracting, casefinding, follow up and other responsibilities of the Data Oncology Services Department.
1.3.1 Navigate medical record to review clinical documentation to determine case reportability.
1.3.2 Analyze clinical documentation of reportable cases to extract data and apply demographic, tumor characteristics, treatment, staging, outcomes, and other codes in compliance with accrediting and standard setting organizations.
1.3.3 Review medical record to determine a cancer patient’s vital and cancer status, date of last contact, and other follow up data elements. Contacts providers, other organizations, and state registry to ensure complete and accurate coding and patient follow-up.
1.3.4 Achieves abstracting quality and accuracy benchmark of 97% and task productivity rates of 1.5 hours per case.
1.3.5 Performs casefinding and follow up tasks achieving the department productivity rates of 5 minutes per case.

1.4 Performs data quality control activities on registry data.

Experience Required

1-3 years’ experience working in a hospital cancer registry that included abstracting, casefinding, and follow up preferred.

Education Requirements

Cancer Registry Management, Other Healthcare related.

Must have associate’s degree including clinical practicum in a CoC accredited hospital.

License/Certification Requirements

Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) or ODS-ready - Required
