Remote Worker: No - This position requires the candidate to report in-person to an office daily in Rochester, MN.


Job Summary

The Data Specialist provides primary support and service to Mayo Employees Federal Credit Union (MEFCU) system users and members for data related needs. This role is responsible for identifying, collecting, analyzing, interpreting, and providing data visualizations to support strategic initiatives, improve operational efficiency, and enhance member growth and satisfaction. This position utilizes data from disparate systems while ensuring its confidentiality, integrity, and accessibility. This role supports the segmentation and automation of data processes, and provides business intelligence in the form of reports, dashboards, spreadsheets, and other extracts for various business units and third parties.Β Β 


Organizational Relationships

The Data Specialist reports to the Chief Information Officer (CIO). This position works collaboratively with MEFCU staff.

Duties and Responsibilities

Collects, cleans, and analyzes data from various systems to provide meaningful information.

  • Identifies, collects, and organizes relevant data from diverse sources using SQL and scripting tools to support analysis, reporting, and decision-making processes.Β 
  • Utilizes data on members, products and services, delivery channels, competition, industry, and market trends to provide actionable insights and improve member growth and service.
  • Provides ongoing analysis to determine relationship values, profitability, utilization, and continued feasibility for products, services, and delivery channels.Β Β 
  • Ensures the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of data stored within systems and in compliance with regulatory standards. Ensures data integrity and accuracy through validation and quality checks.
  • Assists in the development of data-driven strategies to maximize value of data assets.

Reports data using various platforms conveying important information in a way that is easy to understand.

  • Develops dashboards and reports using tools like Jaspersoft, IBM Data Studio, or Excel.
  • Creates spreadsheets, dashboards, charts, and other reporting to help articulate business narratives.
  • Assists in preparing reports for departmental, committee and board of directors as needed.
  • Enables advanced analytics capabilities that provide meaningful value through easy-to-comprehend data visualizations.

Partners with other MEFCU teams and departments with data related solutions and information.

  • Responds to data requests from users and assists in responding to regulators and auditors as requested.
  • Identifies trends, patterns, and insights to support business decisions across departments.
  • Manages multiple requests and supports multiple projects simultaneously while adhering to project timelines. Provides regular status updates on project progress.Β 
  • Collaborates with stakeholders to define Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and reporting needs.
  • Collaborates with Marketing to define Key Lifestyle Indicators (KLIs), provide data extracts (e.g., lists, reports), build data-powered campaigns, and track and measure campaign performance.
  • Conducts ad hoc analysis to support marketing campaigns, loan performance, member segmentation, risk assessments, and other operational activities.
  • Assists in training supervisor level staff on various dashboards, tools, and reporting that will aid them in their branch and department operations.

Provides excellent customer service, support, and education to system users.

  • Acts as primary contact and first tier IT support related to any data support request and as a second tier of IT support to users as needed.Β 
  • Provides education and training to employees on IT systems as needed.Β 
  • Develops accurate and timely documentation for IT/data systems and services (e.g., procedures, instructions, diagrams, end-user guides and tutorials). Completes accurate reports and documentation in compliance with established procedures.

Performs other duties as assigned or necessary.

Requirements

Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in data science/analytics or a related field and at least two years of experience in a data analyst, database support, or similar role (internships or academic projects can be considered).Β Β 

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.


All employees must be bondable by MEFCU’s insurance policy. Continued employment is subject to maintaining favorable bondable status per insurance standards.


Desirable Qualifications

Experience, coursework and/or certifications in SQL, data analytics, or database management (e.g., CompTIA Data+, Microsoft Certified Power BI Data Analyst Associate, Google Data Analytics).


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Employees in this position are expected to possess and demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, and abilities throughout their employment:

Knowledge of: data science, mathematics, and statistics; database platforms (e.g., MS SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle); data warehousing and other integrated systems; market trends, database and data modeling concepts; SQL, ETL and BI tools; Microsoft Office with proficiency in Excel; data visualization tools (e.g., Jaspersoft, Tableau, Power BI); and scripting and programming languages (e.g., Python, Java).

Skill in: effectively utilizing written and verbal communication; analytical thinking and problem solving; organization with a strong attention to detail; providing quantitative and qualitative data in an understandable manner; identifying, collecting, preparing, evaluating and presenting data; collecting data using SQL and scripting tools (e.g. Java); communicating effectively with others; working with numbers to solve complex problems; and the ability to story tell with data.

Ability to: positively represent the credit union with stakeholders; meet established deadlines; demonstrate follow-through on commitments; work proficiently with numbers to solve complex problems and storytelling with data; prepare reports for various business units; creatively problem solve and think critically; and understand data privacy and security best practices, especially in financial contexts.


Physical and Environmental Criteria

This physical effort required to perform this position is best described as: Sedentary work - Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. The majority of this position involves computer work, which requires fine dexterity in the continuous movement of the wrist and fingers.

Sensory requirements necessary in the performance of the essential functions of this position include: sight, hearing, touch.
