This position is within the SC Central Cancer Registry. This position is for a part-time, Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) certified abstractor. TheΒ Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) certification is required for this position.

Under general supervision of the Data Collection Manager, identifies non-registry and non-hospital data sources in the state. Performs data collection at these facilities according to standards set by theΒ Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR) and North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR). Coordinates all follow-back at these facilities/offices with Data Collection Team and Manager. Performs routine and ad hoc data quality control efforts as needed

Identifies all reportable new cancer cases (Casefinding) from assigned facilities including: non-registry hospitals, independent laboratories, free-standing treatment centers, and appropriate physician offices. Abstracts all reportable patient records that meet criteria for inclusion into the South Carolina Central Cancer Registry (SCCCR) according to national standards set by National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR) and North American Association of Central Cancer RegistriesΒ (NAACCR) as needed to maintain certification for ODS.
Coordinates all follow-back activities in physician offices and other assigned reporting facilities with Data Collection Team and Manager to complete patient information as assigned.
Assists Quality Control staff with clearing cases from Central Registry System (CRS) Pending and Prep Plus.
State Minimum Requirements: A high school diploma and relevant program experience.
Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

Knowledge of cancer registry principles, procedures, and quality assurance methods, including the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer requirements,Β ICD-OΒ coding, multiple primary rules, and collaborative staging methods. Thorough knowledge of cancer data reporting requirements outlined in state statute and regulations. Ability to communicate effectively, work cooperatively with hospital and other medical facility staff. Ability to prepare clear, concise oral/written reports
